Two opening losses in pool play turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the 16 Elite boys as they fell to Epic 16-Pat, the #2 overall SCVA seed, and a scrappy and fundamentally sound SCVC 15/16 to begin their Holiday Classic.

“We got to see what the top teams are doing to be successful and we also learned that we’re more than capable of hanging with them when we play to our potential,” said Coach Alex. “I saw flashes of what we could accomplish together and we built on it through the tournament, it was really fun to see our level of play continually increase.”

Despite the 0-2 start 16 Elite picked up their game and went 5-1 to finish the weekend, taking out SB Coast, United VC, Pacific Rim and Vegas Xtreme teams along the way. The flight 3 championship was a rematch against Ohana AC 16 Black, who had narrowly beaten SG only a few weeks prior. An action packed 3 set comeback win was capped off by an impressive ace by setter/opposite Andy Boyle, prompting his teammates to rush him on the court to celebrate.

“Consistent passing, improved blocking and a very balanced offense were keys to our success. When our quick tempo is connecting we have so many options that are hard to stop, we’re going to give some teams serious problems when we learn to consistently bring the volume and play as hard as we now know we can.”
