The boys of 17 elite kicked off the holiday season a little early this year by going on an epic run at the SCVA Holiday Classic. The squad’s third place finish is the first time in history that an SG boys team has medaled at the grueling annual two-day tournament. Another historic “first” of many collected by this trailblazing team.
“It’s a special group. No doubt. I’ve coached long enough to realize that not all groups of people are the same, or even can be the same, and I can see when one is special. This team is. Or can be. They’re talented and they work hard. They want to get better. It sounds simple but it’s a combination that’s actually really hard to find. They have it,” said head coach Joel Brinton after the tournament.
17 Elite started the tournament off hot with a four match win streak, picking up impressive wins against SB Coast, Coast, EBVA, and Pinnacle.
“We were for sure ready to play. Our offense was good. Jake (Woo) was setting well and our ball control was great, I mean when you have Matt (Aziz) at libero, you’re always going to pass great. The guys is unbelievable. But those were big reasons why we were able to start the tournament off so well,” said Opposite Cade McGovern.
Even though 17 Elite lost to Wave in the 5th match, they turned it around, winning the next two matches against Manhattan Beach Surf, and a wild quarterfinal win against OCVC to guarantee 17 Elite a medal. And it’s no secret why this team is able to turn things around so quickly. Just look at how McGovern talks about his own team above. They’re definitely a team. That’s what being truly together sounds like.
Congratulations on the bronze medal 17 Elite! Your staff and players deserve it.
